The PetSafe Stubborn Dog Fence (PetSafe PIG00-10777)has the strongest correction strength available. This idea appeals to a lot of dog owners that have had problems in the past with the dog running through the boundary line. This is not always a good idea. The strength of correction is not usually the reason for the problem.
There are two common reasons for a dog seeming to ignore a correction and running through the fence, either the dog is not getting the correction at all, or the dog has not been trained in how to retreat once they get the correction. Using a strong correction, like the Stubborn Dog provides does not solve either of these problems.
In a large fraction of cases, particularly in breeds with thick or long hair, the collar is not fitted correctly, so the dog is not getting the correction or is only getting a partial correction. You can tell if the dog is not getting the correction because they don’t react at all, or have an extremely mild reaction like trying to scratch the collar. Often the dog will loiter in the correction area seemingly oblivious to the correction.
Common
The other common problem is that the dog runs through the boundary because they have had inadequate training. It is rare that a dog is consciously choosing to go through the boundary and take the correction. It is more often the case that the dog does not understand what is going on. When they get the correction, they react by attempting to flee the perceived danger and so they run to get away. When this happens a couple of times, they learn the best way to avoid the correction is to run through the boundary. We want the dog to learn the opposite lesson, that the correction means they need to retreat and training is the only way to achieve it.
A dog that needs the correction from the stubborn dog system is somewhat of a rarity, no matter what their temperament or size. We would recommend you start a regular system, and if while you are doing the training the dog does not seem to care when they get a correction, not start out using this system.
