Lighting Protection

Lightning protection devices sit between your boundary wire and your dog fence base station and act like a fuse. If lightning strikes the boundary wire, the lightning protection device protect your base station and your electrical system from getting fried. In the process the lightning protection device itself is often destroyed and needs to be replaced, but this is much cheaper than replacing your entire system.

Do you need lightning protection?

We often get questions about whether you need lightning protection. The answer depends on where you live and the risk. Lighting is most likely to strike your system in:
 •  Areas that have had previous lightning strikes
 •  Areas with a high amount of electrical storm activity
 •  Properties the top of a hill or in a clearing
 •  Areas where ther are no nearby high points to attract the lightning such such as trees
 •  Rural or semi-rural properties

If you don't have many risk factors we would not get the lightning protection and would save the extra cost. Lignthing protection is probably overkill for many of our suburban dweller clients. If it is a real risk for your property, we would err on the side of getting the lightning protection.
